Back to Good Old Rule Days!

Hiya Guys and Dolls,

The school year has finally kicked off and i see all the little cuties walking to school with their school bags and lunch buckets. And of course a lot more traffic with school buses and parents driving them.

I thought back to when i was in grade school and probably the toughest thing for me was when we moved and i changed to schools in second grade. Took awhile for me to adjust and for kids to accept the "new kid" in the class.

I was always in trouble for "day dreaming" in class every single year! My parents would say "NO more day dreaming in school"! But every year i would find myself looking out the window and having countless teachers pull the shade on me or move my desk far away from the window!

My favorite subject was spelling and my worst was math.

What kind of student were you and what was your favorite subject?

I was a math whiz even skipped 7th grade math because 2 many kids.  The people in charge didnt care.  1st day of 7th grade off to the prinicipal's office I went and got told I was 2 report to 8th grade math.  I scored in the top 10% in math and lowest 10% in reading on those achievement tests.  At age 37 I was tested during my divorce and here on a scale of 1 to 8 I was a 7 for a.d.d..  That explained alot.  To this day I dont comprehend what I read.  I used my math to get a BBA with a major in accounting but never passed the cpa exam because of Accounting Theory and Business Law.  The professional who tested me couldnt figure out how I got a college degree because I had no clue what I was reading.  I spent hundreds of hours memorizing notes for midterms and finals.  To this day I cant even organize my sock drawer.  I got yelled at by everyone of my bosses at every job because my office was always a mess and to this day my house is a disaster because I got stuff piled everywhere.  This is normal to me because its just another a.d.d thing.

I was very good in spelling and reading. I'd have to say that 5th and 6th grade were my favorites. Those were the sex ed years and I caught on very quickly. 

I moved to a new state every 3 years so I had to learn to fit in.

I didn't push myself until college.

My son, 14, had math 6th hour the last 2 years.  This year it's 5th hour.
On the 2nd day of school, after math, he went to his locker, gathered his things and starting heading for the bus.  It dawned on him he had one more class.

He entered class 3 minutes late and the teacher said "This outta be good".  Son thought about lying but decided the truth was better.  When he said "I thought school was over", the class giggled and he had to do 5 pushups in front of the class for punishment.

His choices were push ups, sit ups, singing in front of the class or detention before school the next day.

we lived in our hood for 17 years.. i was famous for "out talking the teachers".. not in a bad way, i was a curious child, BUT i was always in trouble for that.. whats weird is i hated english/journalism and loved math and biology, but tables have turned for me.. i'm terrible at math, i wouldn't know an organism from an electron.. but give me a writers pen and paper, some incentive with imagination.. and ooo weeee i'm gone!

how about.. "the crush".. you know the one boy that was the cutest one in the class that you secretly crushed on forever.. well FINALLY after the 5th grade.. he was in my class and sat right behind me... i came to school a little sick one day, i raised my hand to use the restroom, the teacher was ignoring me.. she finally answerd me and said wait for recess.. well i couldn't i pee'd in my chair then threw up all over my desk.. and that crush.... ugh i had to just forgetaboutit... 

The only thing I remember from first grade was that kids were not supposed to know how to read and write, the teacher was supposed to teach us, but I was already reading and writing and that made me some kind of a superstar back then. Then, in second grade, we had elections to pick a student to be the "head of the class", the kids voted and guess who got elected... Maybe I should have gone into politics

Spelling and mathematics were my favourite subjects.  I hated history and geography but I think that was down to the teachers.  They made  potentially very interesting subjects so boring.

When I reached 15, I went to the head mistress and told her I was fed up with the home economics course and could I give it up and do something more worth while.  She offered me a few choices and I chose driving.  I actually learned to drive at school around the tennis court.  It was much better than learning about dust.

I was a lot like Johnny... when I got to a grade I already knew what they were teaching that year... of course that left plenty of time for me to get into hot water, so I did... they were going to skip me a grade, but I was too short of all things. Everyone would be much taller than me, which was just silly because they already were taller than me in my own grade... by 6th grade they had me tutoring 2nd graders to keep me busy and heck they were taller than me too!

Then came Junior High... and it was the '60s... you know what they say about the '60s... if you remember them, you weren't there mannnnnnnn... so, I'm a psychedelic relic...

Next I remember it was the mid '70s and I was in business college taking accounting and teaching in the classes I was taking because once again, by the time the class got there I already knew that stuff and they were short on teaching staff... the good part of that was that I got to finish 3 months ahead of everyone and I had honors in all subjects except typing which they got me thru by a hair and called it good enough! had to get them to correct some of the textbooks too... I could not stand it when they would say my work was wrong and the book was always right... after I sorted out a few of the books' errors they stopped arguing and corrected the books!

Loool, such great stories, guys! I was much like Johnny, except that I pretended not to know how to read and write in order to fit in (and apparently, I liked repeating syllables and spelling after the teacher, along with the rest of the clas), so my mother almost got a heart attack when she came down to school to hear about her daughter's progress. She thought the teacher's gonna praise my advanced reading and writing skills, but all she got instead was: " Oh, Kat is doing well with drawing lines and spelling."

      Lucky,sorry you were picked on!! Kids can be so cruel.I always wondered what kind of home life they had.As far as school went for me I liked English and math but to this day I wonder how I manage to keep my checkbook balanced .My downfall while in school was getting my drivers license!! I graduated when I was 17,which was probably a miracle because once i had that license it was REALLY hard to not just drive by and wave or moon everyone!! I was soooo cool ..yeah right!!

lol funny, and its fine, at least 60% of all children get picked on once, maybe more

Being picked on can be agonizing when your a child or for that matter any age. Thank God most people grow out of that.

Your stories are awesome and it looks like we have a bunch of smarties!!

Once i hit high school my grades weren't so great. I had to take the constitution test twice before i passed it!

We all got picked on 1 way or another.  In junior high I had to ride the bus with a kid that was relentless when it came to picking on other kids.  For 2 years I had to listen to him call me "the zipper".  See I was 5' 9" inches and weighed 115 pounds.  When I stood sideways and stuck my tongue out I was mistaken for a zipper.  I could have been a super model along side Twiggy but unfortunately for me I had balls.

I remember having to stand in a garbage can in front of the class for talking.

I remember i had to put my gum on my nose for having gum in class, when my teacher made rules.. she REALLY stuck to it, guess what.. she got caught with gum in HER mouth.. she had to wear it on her nose... LMAO..

 

I remember my brothers (twins) that they were always in trouble and had to stand in the corner with a dunce hat on!! By the time I head that I kept on thinking of Saturday Night Live and my brothers as two of the coneheads!!LOL

I remember the my first gum experience at school. I was only in first grade and to be honest i am not even sure if i knew it was against the rules.

We were in the library and it was like the first week or so of school when she caught me. I had to stand in the corner with it on my nose. Omg i was so embarrassed and after library was over and it was time to go back to classroom she made me stay in the library.

I had to suffer a brand new humiliation with another classroom. I remembered i started to cry because i had no idea how to get back to my classroom and thought i would be lost forever!

It is a memory i don't think i will ever forget. Did i learn a lesson about not chewing gum in class? Ha! well maybe in first grade i did, but come later grades i chewed it all the time probably out of rebellion!

You are too funny Gabby... I am with imagin on this and also gave you two special thank you's. I was thinking that perhaps your posts just don't keep to the standard set when you posted pics of your wound... how is your poor leg these days?

One more question... was the garbage can a big 55 gal thing or the trash can from the school room?

Yes I did miss giving you a thank you but can assure you it was a complete honest mistake as i was thanking everyone on the page quickly. It's too bad you would feel i singled you out.

It's better expect for the nasty purple scar that will be there forever.  Right next to the 4 inch one I got when showering at my friends house and grabbing her razor to shave my legs.  It wasn't the standard plastic cheapo one I always used, oh no.. It was one of those heavy duty humongo razor blades.  Down to the bone and boy did that bleed.

It was a standard size garbage can.  Humiliation at it's best.

I remember at lunch one day, I have no idea why I thought it would be funny to swing upside down and put my legs on the table while my head was on the chair.  Teacher grabbed me so fast I tinkled all the way to the lunchroom corner.

Gabby I for one definitely knew you were joking and did not miss the subtle humor!

Now I have the garbage can settled in my mind, thanks, I kept picturing it one way and then the other, I just had to know! And the lunchroom!!! Shall we call you Tinklebell? 

I think all of our trips through childhood should have left us scarred for life, but it also surprises me that so many of actually live through it without killing ourselves with the stunts kids pull!

The razor story has me queasy just imagining it! Owwwwwwwwwwww! Reminds me a little of the first time I tried shaving my legs (did not have permission from Mom) although my wounds were many, but not so deep!

My friend and I tried it together at her house and although I only did the first six inches or so from my ankles up it was the story of a thousand cuts! Each with their own little trail of blood... thought for sure my Mom would bust me when I got home if she saw those telltale rivulets on my legs! Still have to laugh when I think about that adventure!

So true RJ and i wouldn't doubt the statistics aren't higher then that. I would hope these kids grow out of it.

There was one girl who was the bully all through grades school and i saw her in a bar years later. I had this image in my head she was still that bully and was hesitant to approach her. I did and as it turned out she couldn't of been sweeter.

I wonder if the bullies reflect back and regret it?

My daughter had a boyfriend in high school that another girl liked. 
The bullying my daughter endured was enough to send me to an early grave.  It started with the girl, then another, and another until it was most of the grade of girls. This girl was one grade younger. I was at the school or on the phone almost daily.

The administration was a joke.  I actually got the vice principal  fired. 

My daughter is a very beautiful, smart, well rounded girl who was loved by everyone... until these snots decided to make her life miserable.

I don't think the bullies really give a crap, as long as they have the upper hand.

You can't imagine the visions of what I wanted to do to that girl.  I visioned driving in front of her and swerving into anohter lane so she would slam into the car in  front of her.  It got that bad.

My daughter stuck it out the entire year and is a stronger person because of it. 

I do believe in karma. I still hope horrible things happen to a few of these bullies.

That has to be one of the most painful things to watch as well for your daughter.

I read somewhere that schools were going to start educating teachers for what signs to look for with bullies and know how to handle it.

I think the worst part of all this cruelty is that the school does nothing to really help nor do the parents of the bullies.

Glad that part of her life is behind her because no one deserves that type of abuse.

How about cyber bullying?? I saw on the news a mother was being questioned and possibly charged because she filmed and encouraged her daughter to beat this girl  who had been bullying her and even got in a few licks herself. What kind of an example is that???

That can be equally as bad if not worse because the bully can exploit them. But there are laws that protect victims of this now and they have come a long way with protecting victims of cyber bullying.

I have heard some of those awful stories too. It's pathetic.

If this is the same case it happened here near a school that was on the other side of the block from where I lived. Gosh I hope it was the one here, don't want to think this has happened somewhere else too!

Cyber bullying was how it started with my daughter.

I took over 4,000 posts/messages to the school and police.  

I have to give my daughter a huge amount of credit.  She did NOT reply to any of them.  I don't know how she did that.

Sorry to say the laws are a big joke!!!!  Having 4,000 pieces of evidence did squat.

I saw that and to be honest, I would have done one thing different.  I wouldn't have allowed my daughter to be the crap out of the girl... I would have done it myself.  Sound horrible but until you walk a mile.....

There was also a very disturbing video of a dad (35) who beat up, REALLY beat up a kid.  He had organized the bully to come over and fight his son.  Ended up the dad planned to do the job himself.  The kid pumped his chest to the dad ready for a fight and he got one.  The worst part was after many punches to the face, when the bully was getting up, the dad gave him a big hard kick to the face.

Still....if it stops one bully.
