Dating Site to Begin Screening for Sex Offenders

Match.com recently had a case filed against them due to a woman being assaulted on her second date with a man she met on their site. The woman believes that the attack could have all been avoided if Match.com would've only done a background check.

There are currently no checks against the sex offender registry being conducted by this singles site but they are working on implementing this feature in the coming months. They insist that the addition of sex offender status was already in the works and is not entirely due to this lawsuit but the attention did put a rush on implementation.

This is absolutely a good thing but this woman lives in an alternate reality if she believes that this will prevent assault. How about taking some responsibility for yourself and your choices. Not that she deserved any harm but it's ridiculous to blame it on Match.com. Wouldn't it be nice if all the bad people were on a master list?

Is the site to blame? What are your thoughts?

Not at all, the woman made the conscious choice to select the man and meet him...the site can't be expected to know the internal thoughs or intended actions of any given person..record or no, anyone could be a bastard, wife-beater, etc.It was unfortunate she was assaulted. Was it foreseeable? Possibly. but a well-respected community man could still be a secret ass. We can all point someone in the direction of the diner; we can't be held accountable for the service or food there

If I owned the site, I would feel a "bit" of responsibility for allowing the man to register in the first place however, that said, you cannot know the ins and outs of every person that registers.

I think the fact that they are prepared to do something about it speaks volumes about the site but I don't see how they can actually be held responsible.

This was the womans' second date and she didn't recognize this man's true face the first time and we are talking about a face to face meeting.
I met my husband through one of my close friends... it her responsibility to take the blame if I found out some certain things(characteristics) that I was not told?

Me and my girl had a good old fashioned introduction. I saw her across the room in a smoky bar  . Seriously neither the website nor the woman is to blame. In all honesty it could've been their 10th date before the loser showed his true colors. Some guys show another side the day after the wedding. Props to match.com for putting something in place to protect the ladies. Just thinking about something like this happening to a female in my family makes me wanna beat some @$$.

There is no way this would work. This will only give women and in some cases men a severely false sense of security. Over the years I have signed up at a few of these well known sites, including match.com, and nowhere on the registration form does it request some form of picture ID to prove who you are. I signed up at plentyoffish.com with false information and pictures of a sexy woman I got from google to catch my husband cheating (he walked, or e-mailed his way right into the trap lol). I then notified the site about it and how he was taking advantage of women's feelings really by what he was doing. You know what they said? They asked for a copy of our marriage certificate and said they would contact him to see if the allegations were true. They expected him to tell the truth. In the meantime we should see a counselor. You can't compare names to a sex offenders list when there is no way to prove who someone is on these sites.

The Site is not at fault.  AND the woman signed the electronic wavier.

It is horrible she got raped....but, ladies, take note!  Meeting a man on an internet site and going off with him after just one date is DUMB. DUMB.

Also, pogoprincess has an excellent point.  This would give a false sense of security to women who use this site, or similar ones.  Yes, it screens out sex offenders with records.  But, what about all the sex criminals who don't have a record, OR offenders looking for an opportunity to hatch their first crime.

This is what happens when fantasy meets reality.  When you meet someone on the internet it is the same as real life (despite the handles/usernames) when it goes beyond emails/messages/texting.  Men/women fall in love with the *idea* of meeting Mr/Mrs Right and "happily ever after" they don't take precautions.  People who are interested in getting serious should do a background check of their own, including a sexually transmitted disease check. (much less the dating site)
