  • I posted this on my FB page, too, but thought it'd be fun to see what you guys all say here.  wink

    I have a DRIVING STRATEGY question for all you very good drivers out there. Say you're driving through the woods on a curvy road that's kinda narrow, and has very narrow shoulders, if any at all. The trees are less than 5 ft from the side of the road in some areas. The speed limit is 25, but most of us are doing 40-45. As you're driving it, another car comes around a curve and is over the line on your side of the road - and doesn't correct itself. It's coming straight at you and you have about 50 ft and a couple of seconds to react. Do you;

    A) Veer to the right, into the trees, where you will most certainly have TWO points of impact - head on into a tree, and on the driver's side from the other car. Or,
    B) Veer to the left, directly at the other car, where you'll only have one point of impact. That one will most likely be head on, or if you're lucky, on the passenger side of the car (no passengers). Or,
    C) If you have any other scenarios you think will work, tell us.

    The reason I'm asking is because this nearly happened to me twice today. The other car corrected, but it left me wondering what I would have done. I'm a big believer in making these kinds of decisions ahead of time, so I don't lose time thinking when a crisis comes up. So tell me what you think you'd do!!

  • I'd hit the brakes and move as much as possible to the right side of the road, but without going into the trees, chances are the other driver will react instinctively and move to the left while hitting the brakes as well.

    It happened to me a few times on mountain roads and I always took this strategy. Worked out well so far smiley

  • I'd certainly hit the brakes (reduces the impact if there is one) plus move as far to the right as possible.  A timely flash of your headlights to warn them you are there too might help.  Lots to do in a short time but not impossible.

  • I guess that the instinctive reaction would be to hit the breaks and turn right, away from the other driver, avoiding the trees if possible.

  • I think a natural reaction would be to avoid the car and end up veering into the tree. If this has already happened to you twice (and im sure it had to be very scary) then i would not do 45 mph and do 25. At least at this reduced speed if you did veer into a tree you could slow down a bit more and the impact wouldn't be so great.

    Lips

  • Lips, you're not the first to mention my speeding......    wink  Honestly, tho, it doesn't feel like speeding at 40.

    I haven't been in an accident, just getting startled by other drivers coming around those curves over  the line, on my side of the road.  My Aunt got run off that road one day by an oncoming driver.

    The area I live in, in upstate South Carolina, has a high accident rate, and an alarming "single vehicle fatality" rate; you should see the pics of some of the cars that have hit trees and killed the driver - they're horrible.  The problem with those is that you rarely know why it happened.

  • I would be a wreck on that rode. Is there any alternative way to go? I know you are nervous can tell by your posts. Maybe those close calls are signs for to you to slow down, stay alert and be prepared ahead of time. You are doing just that. Someone is looking out for you  smiley

  • It's difficult to say what I'd do since you have to think fast. Even plans sometimes don't enter your mind in the moment. I'm thinking that i'd end up in the trees.
