My heart beats slowly faster
this hand could be disaster
were I a poker master
I think I might well fold.

But deep inside me, stirring
something is occuring
my brain is slowly whirring
now bluff you stupid fool.

The pot is slowly growing
seeds of doubt I'm sowing
my cigarette is glowing
I'm trying not to sweat.

Yes, I see him thinking
his eyelids quickly blinking
my heart is slowly sinking
until he folds his hand.

I stop myself from shaking
my smile is quickly breaking
the pot I'm slowly raking.

I see myself in shades of blue
a little shy, and yet I fly
toward a vision I know is true
where endurance breeds self assurance

There’s nothing that can stop my quest
To find my strength, I’ll go all lengths
It’s what makes me the very best

Confidence to call a spade a spade
my power in beauty, combined with duty
Like any man, I am self made
and can achieve, all I believe

A faulty veil of guiltless fraud
Concealed disguise, promoting lies
Yet all enthralled, sit back applaud
Spellbound, seduced, all sense reduced

You think that you'll win the next game
So celebrate your unreached fate
With drinks to enjoy all you claim
Drunk with distaste of distilled waste

False certainty is not that wise
Wreck overtakes all your mistakes
Addict until you realize
When you enthuse, you always lose

My lucky numbers let me down again,
I needed number seven, but it came out number ten,
it happens every week, it’s no surprise,
for fifty years I’ve played the game and never won a prize.

My wife confessed she wanted a divorce,
she’d met another man who owned a mansion and a horse,
I watched her drive away without a sound,
it’s déjà vu for me, this was my seventh time around.

My seven children send me emails now,
I’d answer them politely, but I can’t remember how,
it seems to me it’s all a little game,
comparing all their messages reveals they’re all the same.

My car broke down beside the interstate,
it’s running now on seven cylinders, instead of eight,
I’m passed by all the buses and the trucks,
the quote for the repairs came out at seven thousand bucks.

The cat had seven kittens late last week,
I put them in a bag and went to throw them in the creek,
a council ranger stopped me just in time,
and now I’m doing seven years for vicious feline crime.

I decide
to start out small.
Five dollars? Ten?
That's hardly anything at all.

I feel lucky
when the wheel starts to spin.
I watch it go around-
hey, I win!

My ten has multiplied,
I'm feeling rich.
It's no surprise
I feel the itch.

I bet it all,
everything I've got.
I've been bitten by the bug,
and not one you can swat.

I win again,
I'm walking on air.
Bet it again?
No question there.

This time I lose,
and can't believe it.
I find a chair quickly,
I need to sit.

Here comes my family,
they're ready to go.
I'll get a taxi with the money I-
Oh no!

You start off watching,
Learning the game,
Picking up tips,
Observing the famed.

Your interest grows,
You decide to play,
You lose at first,
But get better by the day.

Next you hit it big,
Start thinking "this rules",
No one can beat you,
They're nothing but fools.

You sit down and play,
Flop a great hand,
Some dumbass calls you,
You're bout to open a can.

He catches a lucky turn,
An even luckier river,
You're a bit nervous now,
Your leg starts to shiver.

You say "whatever",
And you go all in,
He's just bluffing,
You're sure to win.

The cards are turned,
You're heart is pumping,
You have a king high flush,
You're about to be jumping.

Next thing you know,
He shows a full house,
You think "what bullshit",
And feel as strong as a mouse.

You feel almost cheated,
It was so unfair,
You can't go out like that,
That call was practically a dare.

So you pull out more money,
And sit back down,
But you're on tilt now,
And about to drown.

What do ya know,
You lost again,
You're flat broke now,
And swear to never gamble again.

Gambling is the devil,
I guess it goes to show,
That after three whole days,
You're far from a pro.

On Gamblers

G amblers are always trying new ways to make a bet

A nd then end up getting themselves deeper into debt

M oney is not there when needed to put food on the table

B ecause they throw it away as soon as they're able

L ook how often this tragic habit affects their health

E ver they constantly strive to create easy wealth

R eally, all that they accomplish is to lose their wives

S urely, there must be a way out that will save their lives

Everything I have is tabled
My worth awaits the spin of a wheel.
Will I suddenly see a change of luck
Or am I facing the last deal?

Stricken with a gambling addiction,
Fueled by a need to endure,
Rent's due, car's about to be taken
This fever has me on the lure.

Thirteen black , not so unlucky.... this time
I sigh, as the ball hits the slot.
A windfall of minor proportion,
A chance to take stock of my lot.

The gain, well; I've really gained nothing,
In cash terms I'm back to the start.
The coupe still facing repossession,
The landlord won't show any heart.

The loss just keeps accumulating,
My family, respect, self esteem.
The holiday we were all planning,
New car, New House, distant dream.

What excuse will I fabricate this time,
The lies are getting harder to tell
Sleep lost to a neglected conscience,
Means my job is on the line as well.

I feel so alone with this disease
Amongst friends, relatives, my wife!
This problem is slowly destroying me,
Eroding everything in my life.
