Hi gang:
Times are tuff out there. I think we all try to cut corners where we can.
Most of us have heard about generic products and most likely tried a few. Some are good, some not so good. We are the judge in our own household.
My post tonight is about GENERIC FOOD.
Now I know companies claim it taste the same, and spend alot of money advertising their product over brand named. You end up with names like "Spagetti Hoops" instead of Spagetti O's. "Fruit Hoops" vs Fruit Loops. Names like "Bubba Cola" and Toasted oats instead of Coca Cola and Cherrios. (These names kill me)
I just wanted to share a few other items I have tried that most certainly do NOT live up to the claim "It taste just the same as Brand Name."
Generic Hotdogs: These things are just unnatural. From the taste to the color. What in God's name are these made of. The thought makes me squimish. There isn't enough Ketchup or a big enough bun out there to disquise what these things really taste like.
Macaroni and cheese: This stuff to me, taste like someone forgot the flavor packet. It remains dry and chauky regardless of how much milk and butter you put in. I have never found a way to not overcook the noodles. They are etheir crunchy and undone, or soggy and mush city. What exactly is that yellow powder they call cheese?
Canned Vegetables: They claim all vegtables are good for you, however, I have a hard time believing these are even digestable. Furthur more, I find I get more "waste" than food in these cans. Oh yes, the green beans with the stems still attached. Yum Yum.
Generic Beer: Okay...Are they serious? This stuff taste like it has already been drank and recycled, then put back into a new can. It's lame and disqusting. This is just one thing you can't cut corners on.
Generic Ketchup: Remember the slogan Hienz 57 had out years ago about "Anticipation?" Well anticipate this...one squirt gives you a watery, pink substance that taste like the inside of a tin can. Yuck.
Oh, there is many out there, and I am looking forward to anyone else's experience with generic foods that do not quite pass the taste test.
As a side note, before I close, I just would like to offer a few words of advice about generic toilet paper. DON'T DO IT. If you have to go this route, start saving your magazines. Enough said.
All in fun:

I remember years ago MOm would buy the cheapest hotdogs on sale. Lord they were so nasty. Finally I had her try some. She about died and after that, bought a step or two higher. Whew!! One time they tasted like dried dogs..Sort of had a crunch to them..Ewwww..
Generic beer. I can easily remember the time when you could get a case of "Beer" that's it, no fancy label, just "Beer" My BIL drank like a fish and that's what he'd buy.
Veggies....I like the green beans, creamed corn and peasOlives and betts..LOVE THE BEETS!!!:D
Mac and cheese. Yes, the truth is if you want quality on that, buy the higher priced stuff. It's definetly worth the extra and don't forget to include PEAS!!
I always (Even high priced brand) shake the ketchup before using. Yes, I elarned the hard way too -

What a riot...you are always so funny. I remember once I had to eat those generic hotdogs my brother bought...I don't even like eating hotdogs, but when I do, I get them from the deli..the nice crunchy ones. My brothers got this package that probably cost 50. cents flimsy orangy sick looking things..
And your right about the vege too...I like mine fresh..canned..yuk!!
You have really gone too far with the beerDo you need a loan?

HAHA, Been a long time since I have drank generic beer. Back in the days of college and being so poor you drank what you could find....cheap...I tried it once, and never went there again, and I still remember it today.
Your memories of generic hotdogs are just like mine. Orange, flimsy, sick looking things that looked even worse AFTER you cooked them. If you've ever had a generic hotdog...you'de remember that too, for the rest of your life.
Thanks for responding...PMM -

well this isn't generic, but for dinner tonight [i always run low on food towards the end of the month :'(] couldn't find anything to cook and saw 1 box of hamburger helper...well no ground beef, but i did find 2 hamburger patties...chopped them up and cooked it...threw in the box of H.H. PLUS....you know damn well 1 box of that crap does not feed a family of 3 so I also took a box of plain old macorini shells, added a little extra water and VOILA!! a huge pot big enough to feed 4, didn't lose it's flavor or anything so that's a neat trick to try when your short on groceries!!

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! The WORST has to be bagged cereal!!! My mom would try and trick us by putting the cereal in Tupperware containers, but we could ALWAYS tell the difference.
P.S. It wasn't generic, but did anyone ever have "powdered milk" YUCK!!!!!!! That was the low point in my moms life! -

POWDERED MILK?? GAG!!!!.......
When I wrote this post Shelli I thought of that disqusting stuff. I used to have it as a kid. My Mom would get it from some commodities place. We was poor!!!
And yes, the cereal....How about when parents take it out of the bag and put it in the original brand named box to try to fool us kids?
I just thought of cheap potato chips.....Ewwwwwww...they are all crunchy and dark. Break your darn tooth on them.
How about imatation cheese slices? Ewwwwww It looks like cheese, kinda smells like cheese, but taste like wax. It doesnt even melt properly.
Not to be confused with the big block of cheese that the guv'ment passes out. That stuff was the best. So was the gallon of peanut butter they used to give out. All the oil still on the top of it. YUmmmm

There is a social justice to this issue. The good, healthy food is also the most expensive. The lower cost food is often the cheap, over processed stuff that is very unhealthy. I volunteer at food banks, food pantries, etc. I hate to say this, but the food that is donated to these organizations is stuff I sure wouldn't feed my kids.
