Gun safety for kids...

We often see and hear how many children and young people are hurt by guns in these days...
I have always asked are my children at risk if I own a gun but this is a controversial subject.

Is this a valid argument for putting the parents in jail or is it a valid argument for gun control?

If you ask me I'd say that people shouldn't have guns, guns bring more problems than they might solve.

A kindergartner with a gun? OMG! Some very irresponsible parents.

Well, going back 100 years (Old west) many kids knew what a gun was for back then. As we have become "Less Violent" (Yeah right) the worry of carrying a weapon for self defense has lessened. However, home defense is still a hot topic.

Many experts have questioned the need for handguns, but a nice semi-auto shotgun is the best use and it's REALLY hard to conceal in a backpack

Regarding the kid taking a gun to school, I suspect he didn't realize the danger and was just "Showing off" to his friends...(Maybe)

Nan i would have to say a valid argument for gun control. We can get mad at the parents all we want and yes they be partly to blame. But kids at that age are curious little creatures and grease lightening fast.

I think any parent that loses a child to a gun shot from their very own gun is paying the biggest penalty higher then any law could generate...........sorrow.

My dad thinks it's absolutely ridiculous we haven't taken our children to a gun range to properly teach them to shoot and respects guns.  He's appalled we don't have one.
My dad is a button down business man and has never hunted. He is big on the amendment and the right to bear arms.

Last week, my family went to a barbecue at the home of one of my 10yr olds ball buddies.  They just moved here a couple months ago.  Walked around the corner and both boys had PLAY guns to their heads.  The new boy taught my son about Russian Roulette and they were playing.  OY!  I didn't make a scene but we had a talk about guns/not playing that game/dangers etc. (when we got home) and over the next few days to drill it into his head.

Education is key in the right to bear arms.  Never aim a gun at anything you don't mean to kill.  I grew up around guns, but rifles and shotguns, not handguns.  Handguns are for killing people.  Everyone used to get me to sight their rifles in for deer season.  I used to teach riflery at a summer camp, and I think it is a good skill to have even if you never hunt.  You never know when your youthful camp adventure could come in useful, like should the economy fail and you need to protect your family and your ass-ets.  Even with education, accidents happen.  A lot of accidents are accidentally on purpose.
Those are my random thoughts on the issue. 

I agree with what you have written.  While living in Hawaii, my mom came home with robbers still in the house.  They kept coming back and stalking her.  She learned to fire and kept a gun in a briefcase in her car at all times.

My husband wanted to buy each other Glocks for Christmas.  How romantic....lol

It's horrible when youngsters get ahold of guns and curiosity takes their lives.  Gut reaction is to blame the parents for not having the gun under lock and key and the bullets elsewhere but I often wonder.....what good would that do if you needed to protect your family from an intruder?
