  • Heaven forbid we hold companies to truth in advertising.

Calling themselves the Sensible Food Policy Coalition, the nation’s biggest foodmakers, fast-food chains and media companies, including Viacom and Time Warner, are trying to derail standards proposed by four federal agencies.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has also lent its lobbying muscle to the effort.
The guidelines are designed to encourage foodmakers to reduce salt, added sugars and fats in foods and drinks targeted to children.
If their products did not meet the standards, foodmakers following the guidelines would refrain from advertising them to children.

What do you think of food ads for children now these days?
Sometimes I feel that they tend to promote way too much of ghastly fats, sugar, and obesity-producing ingredients...for their profit purpose.
  • I agree Nan.  There are so many obese children over here and it's not just the fatty foods.  They don't go out and "play" like they used to before they had computers, game consoles and hand held iphones etc.  They spend too much time either in front of the TV or in front of a computer.  Add to that the current situation with govt cuts, no pay rises, food and utilities flying through the roof, people are having to choose non-healthy food because not only can they not afford healthy food but because they are trying to make ends meet, they are working two or three jobs and don't have the time to cook healthy foods.

    It's a big vicious circle.

  • I grew up in the clueless blissful 60s, and the ads always filled my brain with thoughts of yummy food.  Nobody talked much about ingredients or healthiness just fun fun fun.

I don't think the companies should provide any false advertising.  What I would like to see is more education to the children and the families in how to tell if what they are eating is good for them in the long run, what things can happen if they eat the wrong foods, and how to make changes in their diet to promote better health.
