John Edwards' day of reckoning has come.

A federal grand jury has indicted the disgraced ex-senator over his alleged use of campaign funds to cover up an extramarital affair during his 2008 presidential campaign.

The case of USA vs. Johnny Reid Edwards contains six counts, including conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements.

If the ex-poster child of the Democratic Party pleads guilty, he could be stripped of his license to practice law. A trial would almost certainly be lengthy, expensive and highly publicized -- where more salacious details about his campaign affair and the child he fathered during it would likely be revealed.

Edwards, 57, has been the subject of a two-year investigation into whether his political donors gave more than $1 million to Rielle Hunter, his campaign videographer and mistress, to hide the affair as he pursued a bid for the Oval Office.

His attorneys have vehemently denied that Edwards broke the law. His spokeswoman said she wasn't aware of the filing and declined to immediately comment.

The two-timing politician admitted to his relationship with Hunter in 2008, but it wasn't until 2010 that he copped to being the father of their child, Frances Quinn Hunter.

The National Enquirer, which first broke the story about the affair, claims Edwards recently pleaded with Hunter to help cover for him in hopes of avoiding a stiff sentence -- something she refused to do.

"When John found out that he was close to being indicted, he begged Rielle to cover for him," a source told the publication. "He cried to her, 'I don't want to go to jail!'"

But the Enquirer has gotten details wrong about their relationship before. The magazine reported last February that Edwards asked Hunter to marry him and the duo was purchasing an exquisite $3.5 million beachfront home. The story was later discredited.

It's unclear what the status of their relationship is, as Edwards has spent much of his time in seclusion since admitting to the affair. His wife of 33 years, Elizabeth Edwards, died of cancer on Dec. 7.

The culmination of the investigation is leaving many wondering whether Edwards can repair his tarnished image.

"Trial or not, John Edwards is the Charlie Sheen of American politics - great hair and no chance for rehabilitation," Democratic consultant Jack Quinn told the AP.

  • Sorry folks, but using campaign donations to cover up a sexual affair is a legit legal issue!

Plus, there is the YUCK factor.  While his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer he was running around, fathering a child with a mistress.  Bad stuff.

  • May Elizabeth rest more peacefully now that karma has paid John a visit.

  • Who keeps voting for these jackasses?

  • Is he another corrupt, rotten, extremely selfish, greedy, non trustworthy politician who is getting what's deservedly coming to him?
