Media quiet about San Antonio theater shooting.

On Sunday December 17, 2012, 2 days after the CT shooting, a man went to a restaurant in San Antonio to kill his X-girlfriend. After he shot her, most of the people in the restaurant fled next door to a theater.

The gunman followed them and entered the theater so he could shoot more people. He started shooting and people in the theater started running and screaming. It’s like the Aurora, CO theater story plus a restaurant!

Now aren’t you wondering why this isn’t a lead story in the national media along with the school shooting?

There was an off duty county deputy at the theater. SHE pulled out her gun and shot the man 4 times before he had a chance to kill anyone. So since this story makes the point that the best thing to stop a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun, the media is treating it like it never happened.

Only the local media covered it. The city is giving her a medal next week.

The theater mentioned was the Mayan 14, meaning 14 separate theaters in one.  How fortunate it was that the deputy was there and responded quickly.

I'm amazed this hasn't made your big newspapers.  Talk about manipulation of the masses.

News people have their priorities messed up, and that's been going on for a long time. It's the number of bodies that makes something more or less important in the news, that's sad but that's how it is, unfortunately.

I think the article is trying to point out that the media doesn't want to glamorize the carrying of guns in public places, even by a deputy sheriff.  They want us to be afraid and helpless, perhaps.  I wouldn't ever want to have to shoot someone, but I'd sure try if I had the same opportunity as that deputy sheriff.  If we were all trained in using a firearm and all were armed for just these circumstances, there might be a few aspiring murderers out there who would think twice before drawing their weapon.

But apparently, I am not following the bandwagon.  Can't believe they are publishing names and addresses of the concealed weapon owners as if they were sex offenders!  I don't understand this at all. 

The news has been manipulative for awhile that's for sure. It seems the more gory or heart wrenching the story the more people watch or take notice.

I've never been a gun fan...they scare the crap out of me.The thought of untrained people arming themselves scares me even more.I doubt that more guns in our society will solve the problem.

I agree with Rosebud, more guns = more shooting = more victims.

I was raised up to be a hunter but only used bb guns and then later rifles.  Shot my first and only buck when I was eleven and still have the receipt for the processing. 

I don't like to be around guns anymore after witnessing a deadly shooting and then having to demonstrate in court with that rifle just exactly how the deed was done. brrrrr sends chills down my chillymellow spine.

BUT...I do believe in the right to bear arms.  I understand that most citizens have not been trained in or raised around guns and I understand most people don't want guns being carried around.  Fact is though that these shooters and others like gang members have more guns than anyone could possibly need.  So I feel that more of us should be comfortable around guns in general and more of us should know how to use one to defend ourselves and others.  Even the odds, so to speak.

I would hope that if I were in a situation where a shooter was a threat that *someone* would be carrying their weapon and take care of the problem before anyone other than the shooter gets hurt.  If there were enough people who were well trained and armed, a shooter might think twice before trying to become the newest mass murderer.

I am all for a better solution.  We are never going to be rid of guns.  In fact, you can make one by using your printer and some of the new plastic "paper".  I recall in the fifties zip guns were being made using a car radio antenna.  I was wondering if our ex-military would adopt the task of carrying a weapon and being prepared to use it for situations where the public is threatened.  I don't know.  There's no good answer.

You might be right Chilly, I've studied some statistics. Here's an example:

On October 1, 1987, Florida's right-to-carry law became effective. (This law requires that concealed carry licensees be 21 years of age or older, have clean criminal/mental health records, and complete a firearms safety/training course.)

Since the outset of the Florida right-to-carry law, the Florida murder rate has averaged 36% lower than it was before the law took effect.

Very interesting that this didn't make National headlines must less local news. I had a feeling after the Connecticut shooting it would be news that would quickly die. I wasn't sure if it was because it was so terribly painful, due to the time of year, the fact it was children or out of respect for the families.

One thing that did cross my mind was not to cause mass hysteria in the public. After reading this story i wonder if that is the case. While the news media appears to have free rein to report what they want there is always someone higher up that controls the strings.

This is not the first story i have heard about that was kept under a low profile since the tragic school shooting. I am sure i'm not alone in having thoughts of some lunatic entering public place i was at recently whether it was a mall or a movie theater.

The question is should these type of tragedies be kept from the public eye to prevent mass hysteria or should it be highly publicized?

There's a thin line there between serving the public interest and making a show out of a tragic event. Publicizing such events can give ideas to so-called copycats, while not publicizing them is not fair to the public. In my view it's all about how you cover such an event, because it definitely needs to be covered by the media.
