  • US Working With UN Could Signal Legalized Online Gambling

The Obama Administration has made it known that he does not want the US to be viewed as troublemakers anymore throughout the world. On Wednesday, Susan Rice, the US Ambassador to the United Nations made it know that the US will work with the UN.

That is a completely opposite stance than the Bush Administration had, one in which they spurned any UN global efforts. The announcement Wednesday has many people in the online gambling industry believing that the move is another step towards legalized Internet gambling in the US.

Already, the US is in hot water with the European Commission over their online gambling laws. The EC has done an investigation and found that the US is in violation of European Union trade laws. They have given the US a grace period to come into compliance or risk a problem with the World Trade Organization.

The US and EC have been in contact, and they have said they are attempting to resolve the dispute. Unlike his predecessor, President Obama has addressed problems that other countries have had with the US, as opposed to simply turning their back on these countries.

The desire of Obama to reach out is what has people believing that he will eventually oversee the changing of online gambling laws. There have been two proposals offered in regards to online gambling in the past several months.

Representative Barney Frank has proposed legislation that would overturn the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The legislation would also set the framework for legalized and regulated Internet gambling.

Senator Robert Menendez has offered a similar legislation proposal. Menendez' proposal focuses on legalizing online poker. Internet poker has become a hot topic on message boards across the country after the US seized bank accounts that held funds to pay out online poker players in the US.

Wednesday was a day of hope for anyone in the US who enjoys online casinos. There have been many of these days in the past six months, but with every clue that the US is trying to mend foreign relation ties, comes another wave of enthusiasm.

  • This is good news and i heard it will go through as early as next year. you are gonna be able to gamble in Vegas or Native American casinos from the comfort of your own home.

  • Sounds great, but with what we're seeing from the good ole white house, we'll be doing good to have money to play with or home to have computer in. My son has been laid off and is losing home. Several of our neighbors in same fix.
Times may get to where we won't be able to play anything but the fun play....I do hope the that better times are ahead, but signs of that are slim now.

  • I agree willowwe.  And what about taxes?  The gov. will want their share you can count on that!

  • Well, regarding taxes, many players will "Possibly" have their accounts sent to the IRS for "Review" and don't begin to doubt this. Remember, UBS and several other banks who were "Supposedly" the silent ones have capitulated to the US Revenue Service and are revealiung names of US clients.

So don't expect any of those casinos to remain silent.

The thing I'd be scared about, is if I owned a RTG or similar casino license as many people LOVED the Microgaming" casinos and they'd be back in short order grabbing piles of cash from the US players.

Not too mention that "The heck with Nevada or going out to the Indian Casinos" when you have pretty much what you want at home. This will precipitate a drop in those casinos revenue and so THEY might be pressuring the Gov to keep the law as it stands..But probably would lose out.

Finally, if this is done, then trust those you have dealt with and be damn careful of ANY new casino. Just because they run great software, they can easily go rogue quickly.

  • There seems to be a ray of hope for online poker and sports betting....but not much said about online casinos.....im hoping this crack in the door will open all doors to gambling online.
