the shooter is in custody. no confirmed casualties. 2 of the injured are law enforcement.
sketchy details right now.
I don't know about the world today, but isn't that always how it is? I think it is WAY TOO HOT outside and it's bringing out the worst in people who were already on the edge of losing their cool. >:(
We need solutions, not more problems. Compassion, not rampaging. Ice water, not alcohol or insanity.
Prayers for the wounded and all that are affected by today's attack, and for the shooter as well. It's hot in Texas, but a whole different level of hot is to be found in hell. (I tried to put the devil smiley here, but on preview it posted "cheesy". imagine Satan <here>)
I wish for peace, and justice. How can we stop this trend of violence? Any suggestions?

I remember being a young flower child and then Manson and family just killed everything that I had hoped for in the world.
Update:
Three people, including a police officer and the suspected gunman, are dead following a shooting near the Texas A&M campus in College Station on Monday, police and university officials say. Four others, including three police officers and a female civilian, were wounded.
According to the College Station Police Department, the gunman was shot and taken into custody. The gunman later died, a police spokesman told the Dallas Morning News' crime blog. A male civilian also died in the "gunfight," police said.
The shooting began when an officer attempted to serve an eviction notice, according to WFAA-TV. That officer, Brian Bachmann, a 41-year-old Brazos County constable, was fatally wounded in the shooting, which occurred shortly after noon about a block away from campus.
"It appears that the shooter [was] shooting from a house with automatic weapons," KBTX-TV said.
The other wounded officers are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the police spokesman said. The female civilian underwent surgery Monday; her condition was not released. -

This is so sad to hear Chilly.
I agree with all of you regarding the total lack of respect not just for others but for "yourself". If you can't respect yourself, then you have no chance of respecting others.
I was watching a "Brits abroad" programme the other night set in the Costa del Sol and I have to say, I felt embarrassed to be British after watching it. British girls were beating up Spanish girls, thieving, violence and drinking to absolute excess.

The really sad thing is that in such a short time the world has gone from a pretty safe place to being a virtual war zone. To fix it, we need to go back about 40 or so years and stifle Dr. Spock.... or at least teach him that sparing the rod spoils the child. When parents hands got tied and they could no longer discipline their children the door was opened. And now we pay the price.

katt
THIS. End of story.
I am not embarrassed to say that I sometimes think that a short sharp smack on the bum or the back of the legs would have my kids listening for a change; it certainly had me listening to my mother when I was a young lad. And you know what...she never beat me, I love her to death to this day, and I respect the incredible job she did, but yes....PC Crowd....she occasionally gave me a smack on the back of the legs and it worked, and, furthermore, by the way, looking back, I have no doubt I deserved it.
What I AM embarrassed about is that sometimes if my kid’s dont get what they want they act like animals in public and I am helpless to help or intervene due to me simply touching my daughter these days can be deemed inappropriate, let-alone, providing an actual consequence that they will be compelled to avoid. But, in these instances, there is no way I will actually give in to that type of behaviour.
So instead I endure the looks and condescension of hundreds of shoppers while it goes on. And why does it happen? Because we are no longer allowed to provide consequences for bad behaviour other than empty threats of no dinner or toys being taken away. The latters is a complete non-threat these days anyway as they have so bloody many. Plus, in reality, how can you not give your child dinner? Even if you were to follow through on it one evening, what about the next time, or what if it happened again the very next day. In order to keep following through the kids would eventually have no meals left to have. It’s Nonsense.
And, I too agree, this lack of discipline, unless the father has one of THOSE auras where everyone just knows not to be stupid, is contributing entirely to our kids growing up and not giving a hoot about anyone or anything and expecting the world to be handed to them. Then, when someone bigger, or angrier, or unhappy shows the kids a slightly different view of the world than they are used to with a bit of roughhousing or whatever, we have to console our kids like it’s so awful and they must be careful etc., all the while knowing deep down that that is actually somewhat normal and what’s abnormal is kids growing up with parents too afraid to be parents and having to pander to their kids.
Then, when reality fully hits, they become confused and scared having been sauntering through life getting away with everything and everything, and one of three things happens. They get a gun fantasising about revenge, they get an illegal drug dealer to forget their *cough* pain, or they get a legal drug dealer by convincing a doctor who only gives you four minutes and 30 seconds per appointment that they are desperately depressed and/or anxious and they need pills to take the edge off, to which, of course, with way too few questions, doctor duly obliges.
Sorry to go off topic but this really chokes my chain. It’s all the worse in those god damn shopping centres as you just know those pretentious snobs who stare and say with their eyes "You really ought to control your child. Oh, what a racket, I can’t bear it", are the same jackoffs who would cry foul and act appalled if I actually tried to “control my child” with the best known method, a little smack to back of the legs.
They can’t have it both ways; If parents have to follow rules from someone else about how they can raise their own children and as a result have to essentially let them run amok for fear of being labelled something hideous and entirely without justification, no one can expect anything other than selfish, expectant, and angry teenagers and young adults, and even younger kids now, who, when they dont get their own way, retaliate expecting it to work for them and entirely unprepared for the real consequences of real life.
If police are allowed to hit protestors with batons, smoke canisters and pepper spray and claim they thought it was teetering on getting out of control, then why can I not give my own children a little smack if I see their behaviour threatening to spin out of control? Or worse, if I can see a pattern of behaviour that if developed upon will only set them up for trouble in the future, most probably in the form of Jail or a local hospital if they are lucky.
NONSENSE. Makes me SO angry.

I dunno how we can stop all this violence chilly. Does it start at home?
Kap i agree with you about disciplining kids. We have turned into such a society of scrutinizing every little thing with groups who protest. Just the other day i was talking to froggy about three brothers we grew up with and how they had a terrible violent streak. I said how in the world can all your kids grow up like this and froggy knew the mother well and said she encouraged it.
Example recalled was a little girl next door to them that this mother didn't like and told her oldest son a couple years older to beat the girl up! I recall a time when we were kids her son got a hold of this little and ripped her earring out of her ear, tearing her earlobe and it was bleeding. I was horrified. The mother got a knock on the door about what her son did and her reply "she must of deserved it" and slammed the door.
So is part of the problem the way we are raised?

Values given you as you grow do have a lot to do with it. I think the first part is that we are humans, and we are animals. But that's just the framework with which we have to work through our lives.
I am pretty sure that every generation throughout time has had to deal with these issues and wonders what went wrong with the younger generations.
Kind of like the more things change the more they remain the same. Family #1, well, bear with me...somehow humans were created, but if you follow the biblical path, God created Adam and Eve. Their 'parents' was God. God gave them a nice life and place to live it. He raised them up knowing not to eat of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge (of good and evil). So it was all "good" until those darn kids ate that apple. Then it started getting really hard and painful to live a life. I'm sure Adam and Eve learned a little lesson and raised their children well, but then, that darn kid Cain killed his brother. Why is this happening, maybe they wondered.
Throughout time, monstrously horrible things have been done to humans by humans. And people contemplated how to fix things. But then go to another culture, and what you think is evil is commonplace. Think about human sacrifice or cannibalism. If you grew up exposed to these, it was not that big of a deal. If you grew up without that in your environment, and then encountered other people who wanted to eat your children, well, that would be horrible and you would wonder how to fix this problem.
As humans grew more advanced, and communicated, we shared ideas and beliefs and started to have a more global understanding of how we should behave and what was right or wrong became more universal.
After communication started becoming instantaneous, we were aware of situations affecting others and made steps toward changing. But still, things happened and we wanted to know why and tried to figure out how to get back to a more peaceful life for everyone. And progress was always made, but still bad things happened.
Some people might come up with bad ideas on their own, but most of it is imitation. And unless you were raised well, you might see a lot of bad behavior and want to be even more bad, as that is what you were exposed to and raised up in.
My grandparents had a great ethic, but still bad things were happening. They raised their kids with as much hope for the future as the world could offer, but still bad things happened, and I'm sure they were shocked by the bad behavior of the younger generation.
And me, I was raised with good values, the strongest of which is the Golden Rule, and I wanted to do what I could to follow that. But as I was exposed to more and more alternatives, through news, movies, and tv, well, I was inclined to try out a few of those bad behaviors.
And my parent's generation wondered what went wrong and blamed it on all sorts of things.
All a matter of perspective. In the end the guy who kills a hundred people and the most holy person in the world all end up in the end, dead. The best that we can do is to be productive, be helpful to others, love our families and friends, come home at night to a good meal, relax, enjoy our time, and go to sleep and start over again. But we still end up dead, and *could* have just gone through life being brutal and still ended up dead.
(not considering afterlife, the belief of which is enough to keep our values in check)
There isn't a real solution that will last. In terms of the universe, whatever is happening is what is supposed to happen, and the universe is fine with that. It is us, with our conceptions and values who worry about things. It's a tough situation, but it is what it is. -

I think it's important to show appreciation to your kids throughout their childhood and really show them that they are loved.
Even though a smack on the bum seems like a good solution, it doesn't solve anything and even could have some negative consequences. Kids could learn that when something isn't going their way, they can just smack someone to get what they want. I remember seeing a father, he smacked his child on the bum in public, and it got even worse; the child started screaming and it was a really awful situation.
