  • The worst is when I smile and nod and someone is actually asking a question. Well of course they want an answer. Then your tricks are exposed. They know that you either haven't heard or understood a word of what they've said when they see that smile and nod.

I was out and a man apparently asked me where I was from. I didn't catch what he said and I just smiled and nodded. He was staring at me as if waiting for something. I'm looking at him like uhhhh. Anyway, he asks again. I caught it this time! OMG I felt so silly!

Ah, there's no way out of that is there? How hard is is to just say "excuse me" or "pardon me" or "what"? For some reason I'd rather take my chances and just smile and nod.

    What's your style?

  • Ita Froggy.  It is like what you're asking is unimportant.  Just as rude to me is "whatever" as a response.

Btw Froggy how is your England excursion?

  • If I've not heard a question (particularly when they are lengthy and boring questions), I tend to just say "can you run that past me again so I can get my brain around it".  But with short questions it is tricky I agree.  So it's a straight "pardon" from me.

Aww I'm not trying to be rude.  :'( Actually quite the opposite. Mostly just small talk in a grocery line etc. and I hate to say I didn't catch what you've said.

My experience in England has been wonderful so far. People have been really nice. It's very different yet similar if that makes any sense. Having a great time. Thanks for asking.
  • Froggy i completely understand and in no way think you are rude! It is a very tricky situation particularly when you are speaking to someone from another culture/accent.

I do the same thing just sort of nod sometimes because i don't want to make them uncomfortable because i may not catch what they said due to lingo differences.

The British accent is beautiful and in no time at all you more than likely will be speaking with the same accent and lose some of your American accent. And when you do i will envy you!!

  • I'm hard of hearing, & so I often find myself just nodding/smiling, rather than asking the person 2 repeat themselves.  However, I HAVE become QUITE proficient @ reading lips!
