Started out a very crap week

When I was undressing my daughter for her bath, I noticed a hump on her back. Took her to the doc today and confirmed my fears-she has scoliosis. They want to refer her to an orthopedic surgeon. I am just sick right now. My poor baby has had enough thrown at her in this life already, and she does not need this crap piled on her. I just don't know. Surgery is so risky and with her being nonverbal, we don't know what hurts her. Not to mention they have all these limitations and exercises after surgery that she won't be able to understand. The surgery consists of cutting her open the length of the back and screwing metal rods onto the spine. I just don't know, I am going to be an absolute wreck. I had so hoped we were done with the physical aspect of her condition. I know for certain that if the surgery require she be laid up for a long long time I will refuse. Poor baby didn't walk until she was 3 and she would have to literally be tied to the bed to make her stay.  I am just so effin scared.

I can understand your concerns, and I can imagine how scary this must be for you and her both.

What is Scoliosis? Ive heard of it before, but not exactly sure what it is.

I think if you find out what to expect, and maybe get in touch with others that have had the surgery, it will make it alot easier for you.

I know nothing anyone says is going to make it feel better, and Im so sorry you are having to go through this, and I wish there was something I could do to make all this go away. I definatlely know what its like to have a child with disablilities, and if you need someone to talk to, you can always PM me or email me, I know I dont know you, but just having someone to listen can make all the difference.

You and your baby will be in my thoughts and prayers tonight.

Why we are faced with challenges when we feel we are already at out breaking point is a question we all struggle with in this life.

In times like this, when we feel we have no control, try to remember God is in control at all times, and he never gives us anything more than we can handle.  I know that seems silly to say, but I believe it.  What doesnt kill us makes us stronger.

Take one day at a time, and learn all you can about the surgury, to educate yourself.

My prayers are sent, and will continue to be sent for you and your daughter for a long time.

I agree with Lips, definatelty visit a few doctors prior to making any decisions. I know several people with scoliosis that avoided having any kind of surgery...so there is hope!

I'm so sorry to hear your little daughter has scoliosis.  I've looked at the UK NHS website and the fact that your doctor is recommending surgery so quickly is a bit of a worry. 

Please read here where you will see that treatment is not required in 90% of cases.  I too suggest you see other doctors before making a decision.  It may not be necessary to have surgery at all.

I hope and pray she doesn't need surgery once you have seen other doctors.
