  • Reading the "Eating for $1 day day" post:

Our church challenged us to try the welfare diet.  In other words, you get to spend what the average family your size gets in welfare support.....food stamps.  Then we were asked to take the diffence in the cost of the welfare diet and what we usually spend on food and donate the difference to a food pantry.

The purpose was to make us more empathetic with the poor.  However, it ended up having an opposite effect in the area of food.

In my home we discoverd we ate very well.  Now, we had to shop smart, buy some in bulk, fix and prepare food smartly.  No eating out.  We discovered we feasted VERY well on the welfare diet, ate more healthy, and had more fun cooking together.  At the end of three months we had $1100 in savings!  (That included the eating money, too.)  We gave half to the church and spent a great weekend at the beach with the rest!

  • I was very sick one time and had to spend a few months out of work, and went on food stamps.  I also realized how much I can do without.
(I still haven't been able to shake that gamble waste yet)  grin
    but that's another story...

  • when you have so many children you have to shop very smart...its almost like its in my blood, i use coupons, save as much as i can, when things were pretty bad had to go on food stamps as well...I too realized what i can do without...the gambling thing yeah like nalgenie said is another story

  • Yeah, same here.....I am better at budgeting for food than I am the gambling!

  • i think i have learned to budget everything  else so well, because i cannot learn to budget my gambling  grin
