The ice bucket challenge in aid of ALS

hi all,

I'm sure you have all noticed the latest craze for the ice bucket challenge on fb.  It is a great way to raise awareness and money for ALS (motor neuron disease).  People are asked to donate once they have completed the challenge.

I happen to think this is a fantastic thing to do and although i haven't been nominated yet (am sure there is one on its way tomorrow for me  )

What does everyone else think of this and have you done the challenge yet?

The challenge is a great idea because it brings awareness regarding the disease but I hope most people will start donating without doing the actual ice bucket thing.

I think it's a great idea and it certainly has raised awareness.

It's a great way to raise awareness about the disease. Hopefully, people will continue to help after this craze is over.

Some are doing the challenge to get out of donating and it initially started as a good way to raise awareness but now I think it's losing the meaning.

What I dislike about this challenge is that is has became "trendy" thing to do now, and has no or very little to do with the initial good cause ...

i know there are some doing it and not donating but most of my friends are donating as well and posting the donation txt to fb, and i jinxed myself as i ended up nominated myself today so my daughter took great pleasure in pouring a bucket of ice water over my head , donated straight after too 

Everyone is my neighborhood did the Ice bucket challenge.  It was a cool event since everyone
was out at once, even the little kids.....  The nominations for others went from the neighbors dog (that is just mean) to the oldest grandma and grandpa.

My son (13) got so many 'likes' on his instagram video of it... another way to spread the word.

Just wanted to write exactly the same thing. Everytime I see some ice bucket challenges it's all about "let's have some fun, look what I've just done, can you do it too?" instead of trying to help or even without thinking about idea of it.

I didn't know what ALS was . I did not know why I was seeing a lot of people doing this ice bucket challenge .....I didn't understand until I clicked this link  ALS Ice Bucket Challenge  " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h07OT8p8Oik#t=126"  I hope I did this right .          I have to say that after watching this video .....  I pray to god they find a cure for this.      I got the meaning of how Important raising awareness to this illness is. !   

I came to post the very same video.  That's what it's all for and I hope that they research this terrible disease and find a cure.

The thing I find hardest to deal with in this video is nothing that you see (although it is tough to watch that poor Mother of his) but the thought of what is the mental capacity of the poor Mother?  Is she still of sound mind and what sort of nightmare must that be if she is?

From what I understood blueday is that this disease robs you of all your motor skills until eventually you cannot even breath on your own.

The ice bucket challenge was chosen because when the icy water is dumped on your back, that is what ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) feels like.

I was thinking the same thing until my son's (age 13) friends all started doing it and nominating others.  I asked them if they knew and understood what the challenge was all about.  Shockingly, they all did.  So, I guess it is bringing awareness, even to the youngsters.

When the challenge is done, the person states their name, who nominated them, who they are nominating  (3 people who have to do it within 24hrs or donate $100), they also state what it is for and say something about the pain it inflicts on those afflicted and a hope for a cure, etc. 

I would much rather this going around on middle school age kids instragrams instead of the usual nonsense.  Or... selfies. ala Kim Kardasian.

My grandfather played ball in the minors.  He practiced with the greats.

2.  Who's gonna know if you donated?
3.  Kind of seems backwards.  You should have to donate to participate.

Speaking of awareness. 
We have volunteered at Feed My Starving Children.  You work on almost an assembly line putting dried foods in bags to send to the poor.  All they need to do is add fresh water and they have a meal with tons of nutrients.  Angelina Jolie was speaking about it and very upset they are dropping tons of these 'meal bags' in countries that have been in a drought for years.  They are getting 'food' with no way to make/eat it.

I know that the videos in ireland that i have been seeing that they have also posted their donation along with the video so we are donating as we participate, it was on a news report that over 100 thousand in ireland alone has been raised for IMND

It's a political shitbucket  challenge. He nominates some Bosnian politicians since he believes they deserve it.

Oh yeah, politicians everywhere deserve something like this.

Sounds to me like a great idea got out of control really quickly. I am all for awareness for chronic illness and on my twitter page most of my posts and you tube videos are directed toward it. Some people just take things too far but i also agree that Charlie Sheen has the right idea. Kudos for him.

Of course I support the challenge and especially the awareness it is raising for this most worthy cause, but I do think it could have been much better thought out -  what I mean is, I hope all these celebrities pictured dumping ice over their heads also made the donation, regardless of the so called rules of the challenge.
