Tina Turner to relinquish U.S.A. citizenship!

I just read on one of the news portals that famous soul singer Tina Turner is to relinquish her USA citizenship.

She has been living in Switzerland for the past 20 years and just recently filed the paperwork with the US embassy in Bern in order to give up her citizenship.

Apparently she said : "has no plans to reside in the United States in the future."

Curious to hear what our fellow USA members think of this act?

I can imagine I would do the same. USA is not all that despite what some may say. And from what I see on TV, read and hear abut, Switzerland is one of the nicest places in the world.

I always tell my friends that if I didnt have a daughter, I would be living somewhere else.

The USA is decline big time. Its no longer a place where you have endless opportunities. Yes, we were the greatest nation at one time, but now I would say there at least 10 other countires that can eb considered better places to live.

And no, im not just saying this because I cant play poker online. That does have somoething to do with it, but its more from the perspective of our government trying to decide what is right for us all the time.

I'm not USA but I will say that I can't understand why she would give up her citizenship just because she's been living in Switzerland for 20 years.  Why not do it 10 or 15 years ago?  Perhaps she needs to sell some records?

I can only guess, but here in the states, you need to be a citizen to receive and do certain things. For example, voting, social security etc.

She is getting old so maybe she needs to start getting some kind of retirement benefits, government assistance idk.

Or maybe she just felt like she was swiss and wanted to become an actual swiss citizen

I understand that maybe she is happy there and 20 years is a long time, but I don't think I would ever relinquish my rights to any country once I have it.. Never say never.

If I married someone from somewhere else and decided to reside there, or perhaps just myself somewhere else, I'd be fine having a dual citizenship.
But I'm a proud Canadian - I can't foresee ever sacrificing it

I would think there has to be a reason she is doing this. Why bother after 20 years to give up US citizenship unless it has something to do legally. I can only guess she is not allowed dual citizenship and needs to have full citizenship where she is at. No matter what the reason i think it is a tough decision to give up your homeland citizenship.

If  it is because she did recently got married, wasn't it her that said...What's love got to do with it, it's just a secondhand emotion"!

Not from US, but I would probably do the same. Specially if I was living in Switzerland for so long. Can't stop thinking it has something to do with taxes

Seems rather weird because most European countries allow dual citizenship, and I also think she could have gotten the Swiss citizenship years ago since she was living there for so long (most countries require 5-10 years of living on their territory to be eligible for citizenship).

personally I would aim to get dual citizenship. In this specific case we would need to hear the full story and her reasons behind this decision.

I would never give up my rights as a US citizen. Dual citizenship is absolutely fine and as is living in another country but it's a shame that she feels such a lack of pride in her own country. I can't say that I understand nor do I respect it.

My preference would be dual citizenship . I think her choice could be tax related , because as far as I know Americans have to pay taxes no matter if they living and working outside of US. In this case Americans with dual citizenship would be faced with paying double taxes , to the Uncle Sam and to their new country of residence as well.

I'm no tax expert but why would you be required to pay taxes in the US on income earned in a foreign country? I assume she doesn't work and I would also assume that she does not own any housing in the US since she wants to renounce citizenship. She may or may not have any US bank accounts but just close them if paying taxes on the interest is too much. This seems extreme to get out of paying taxes especially when there are provisions for US citizens abroad.

Well, not sure how the tax system works, but I am willing to make an experiment: You guys give me a few million bucks, I relocate to Switzerland, and we'll see how everything works out
I would keep the dual citizenship as well, but only if it didn't cost much....
