  • "Omnishambles" has been named word of the year by the Oxford English Dictionary.

The word means a situation which is shambolic from every possible angle.

Other words included "Eurogeddon" - the threatened financial collapse in the eurozone - and "mummy porn" - a genre inspired by the 50 Shades books.

"Green-on-blue" - military attacks by forces regarded as neutral, such as when members of the Afghan army or police attack foreign troops - was also on the shortlist.

The London Olympics also generated a few contenders including the verb "to medal", "Games Maker" - the name given to thousands of Olympic volunteers - and distance runner Mo Farah's victory celebration "the Mobot".

What's your word of the year?

  • According To Oxford American Dictionaries the Word Of The Year 2012 is 'GIF'. cheesy

I'm going to admit it, my word of the year was wrongly spelled word "cool" - "kool". It's been my favorite word for a few years now.  embarrassed

  • My word of the year has to be "feisty".  My new sister in law uses this all the time and I just love to hear her say it with her.

    blue

  • 'Gangnam Style', 'fiscal cliff' and 'mummy porn' have been named among a dictionary's words of the year for 2012.
