  • A person you've never met, until today, is going to die if they dont have a kidney transplant. You find in testing you are the perfect match. Would you donate a kindney to this complete stranger?

Donating a kidney to a stranger (altruistic kidney donation) can produce mixed emotions. Why do people donate to a stranger?  Or why don't they?
Would there have to be financial rewards for you in this donation?

Would you? Wouldn't you? Or you just don't know....

  • well since I have both mine and haven't offered to give one up and there likely are people out there now who need it, I'd have to say no....totally to friend or family member, and I signed my organs off on my death already to whomever needs 'em

I have to agree with 13oclock on this one. I would rather give to my family members than strangers...I also am a donnor on my death.
  • That's a toughie...On one hand, family, but then, maybe that person in need is a parent, with chilodren. Now who is to say they don't deserve a second chance?

I guess it's a matter of what their background is and what are the pluses to giving it?

A child has a Parent to look up to, instead of a gravestone to look down on. To cheer them on at a sporting event, to console them after a tough loss. To support them during tough times and most of all, to be there for them.

A wife/husband has their other half for longer then would have occured. To love them, appreciate them longer then possible. To share those precious moments of being together.

    Hmmm....

  • I gotta say, writing this post, it made me think a great deal about the question before I could answer.

Genenco's post really made sense about the possibilities your gift to give some one else. A child/parent. A wife/Husband.
If asked, and I knew this kidney would be of good use to another human being, I would give it away.

I just think life is so precious, I would do anything I could to extend it for another individual that needs another chance.  Even if it only gave them another year or two, doesnt matter to me, that is two years they were able to live, breath, laugh, love, grow, and be happy.
