Benin is located on the southern coast of the northern portion of Africa with the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. It also borders Togo to the west, Burkina Faso to the north-west, Niger to the north and Nigeria to the east.

Overview

Benin has a land-based gambling industry that's much more advanced than many of the countries in Africa. They have a land-based casino that's fully licensed and a national lottery that's been around since the late 1960s. With all of this having been established, they have not taken much of a position when it comes to online gambling. This has left the regulatory side of things wide open, and players are welcome to play with any foreign sites that they wish.

Licensing

No licensing process is in place for the online side of the gambling industry in Benin. The land-based industry centers largely around a single casino and the national lottery. Because the lottery has been around for so long, it's hard to figure that into the equation to try to decide how that will affect online gambling except to say that many countries outlaw online gambling to protect established gambling interests.

While there have been no serious legal movements in the direction of banning online gambling to protect the national lottery, it's hard to imagine a scenario where potential legislation comes up where this isn't a concern. Because there's only one land-based casino located in the country, it's also hard to see if the licensing for this casino will provide any solid basis for future licensing for the online side of the industry.

Player Protections

Since there's no form of regulation for the industry in Benin, players who choose to gamble online do not have much in terms of government-sanctioned player protections to fall back on. The effects of this can be mitigated, however, as long as players are careful about sticking to gambling sites that have proven themselves to be trustworthy.

It's hard to tell the direction that future legislation will be likely to go. On one hand, they've been very adamant about opening up the scope of their gambling offerings. On the other hand, the national lottery and single land-based casino could influence things in the opposite direction to protect their own interests. It's anyone's guess what will happen in Benin in the future when it comes to online gambling, but for now, there are no laws against it.
