Burkina Faso is a former French colony in West Africa, settled between Togo, Ghana, Benin, Niger and Mali. It is one of the poorest countries on the continent and in the world, with most of its remote regions populated by semi-nomadic villages. Sparse natural resources and arid soil affect the country's unstable economy, which is based on local agriculture and various international corporations and aid.
Low Internet Penetration
Due to difficult socio-economic situation, most of the population battles poverty, emigrating or constantly moving in search of work opportunities and seasonal labor. In such conditions, few households has or can afford internet access, with an estimated number of less than 5% of total population.
Online Gambling is Not Regulated
Though land-based gambling is legal and to some extent monopolized but the government, there are no laws to address online games in any shape or form. Inside physical facilities, residents can wager on slot machines, casino games such as poker and roulette, sports betting and lottery. The Ministry of Finance is the official entity empowered by the government in 2014, to license gambling venues on land, collect fees and taxes, and supervise their activities. Few casinos currently exist in the country, most of them located in the capital city of Ouagadougou.
Internet wagering is not regulated, but that also means locals are not forbidden by any laws to access foreign websites, and will not be prosecuted for engaging in such activities. Younger generations increasingly use mobiles and tablets, and are more prone to internet gaming. Offering a chance to win cash prizes, offshore bookies and casinos are an exciting prospect for the inhabitants of the region, which may play an important factor for the future regulation of online gambling in Burkina Faso. Other nations in Africa, especially southern territories, are embracing e-gaming and quickly adapting legal systems to allow and promote the growth and expansion of this global market, as a way to improve their economies. A well-developed iGaming market offers many employment opportunities and attracts numerous investors.
