Japan is a series of islands off of the eastern coast of mainland Asia. South Korea is located about 150 miles west of its southern shores, and Russia is located less than 100 miles from its northern shores. It borders the Sea of Japan to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east.

Overview

Japan has a general ban on all forms of gambling with a selection of available gambling types set aside as legal. This distinction includes online gambling. The types of allowed betting include lotteries and scratch cards, horse racing, various other types of racing, soccer and other games. It's worth nothing that only pari-mutuel payment structures are allowed.

Aside from this, Japan does not have a standard regulatory body like many other countries where licenses are issued and there is government oversight along those lines. Instead, it's handled in other ways, but there are controls in place to keep the companies from taking advantage of players with shady dealings.

Licensing

A standardized licensing process does not exist in Japan. Instead, there are a handful of companies given permission to run in the country on a case-by-case basis. It's worth nothing that the chances of a new licensing process being introduced in the country are slim to none anytime soon because there is really no political pressure to expand online gambling at all, and it would take a lot to change how things are handled for gambling to be switched over to what's now considered a standard licensing process in a lot of the world.

Player Protections

For illegal types of online gambling, there are no types of protection from the government. They are fairly strict about enforcing fines for people who are in the business of gambling, but as far as online gambling goes, there aren't really any public cases of people getting in trouble for it while playing from inside of their own homes. We can't recommend illegal online gambling, but players who are going to do it anyway should make sure they play with reputable sites that have a history of paying out reliably.

As far as legal forms of online gambling go, there are controls in place to make sure that companies take care of their players and follow the rules even though there is no standardized licensing procedure in place.
