Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a Scandinavian country located in northern Europe. It borders Norway to the west and north-west, Finland to the north-east, the Baltic Sea to the east, and Denmark and the North Sea to the south.

Online gambling in Sweden is regulated by the Gambling Act.

Approved by the Swedish Parliament on June 7, 2018, the Act was drafted to take effect on January 1, 2019.

The law oversees ALL areas of gambling, both online and land-based, allowing foreign operators to apply for online licenses.

It represents the peak of national initiative to re-regulate once monopolized market.

Tax rates for online gambling are set at moderate 18 percent rate.

Licensing

Foreign and domestic operators can apply for online licenses IF they fulfill quality criteria and oblige to protect players from excessive gambling. A license will be awarded to the company suitable to operate the business in accordance with the law and regulations.

Player Protections

The players are well protected (the common denominator for both the monopolized and liberal markets). In accordance with the Gambling Act, licensed online operators are:

  • To observe players’ protection from excessive gambling;
  • To monitor the players’ gambling habits;
  • To proactively approach players early if problems with gambling behavior are noticed;
  • To advertise moderately and to realistically reflect the possibility of winning;
  • Not to target minors in their messaging.

Players are additionally protected by a national self-exclusion register enabling them to be omitted from all license holders for a period of at least 12 months.
