Uganda is a land-locked country in Africa. It borders Kenya to the east, Tanzania and Rwanda to the south, Democratic Republic of the Congo the west, and South Sudan to the north.
Overview
Online gambling in Uganda is really interesting because it's a combination of limited regulation with extremely reliable licensing. They only have sports betting regulated on a national level, and other forms of online gambling are in a legal gray area. With that having been said, the way they handle their regulated sports betting sites is really great, and it's something that other online gambling jurisdictions could learn from.
One of the main things that really stands out about the Ugandan National Lotteries Board, the governing body over online gambling in the country, is that they're very active about trying to clean up the industry in their country. They are much more than a rubber stamp, like what you find in many other online gambling jurisdictions that have a more hands-off approach.
Licensing
Licensing is only in place for sports betting sites in Uganda, and there are no other licenses being given. However, to get a license, the company has to put up a bond worth the equivalent of a little over US$75,000. The point of this bond is to cover payments for customers if the site bails. They see a lot of sports betting operators that are owned by foreign companies, and they want to protect their players as much as possible. This is a great way to do so, and it just goes to show that there are a lot of different ways to do this that haven't really been explored in as much depth as they could be.
Player Protections
As you can see from the above, there are some pretty serious levels of player protections for companies that are licensed to operate in Uganda. However, not all online gambling operators that run there are licensed, and players are on their own when it comes to dealing with these operations. Players are advised to stick to licensed sports betting sites that have their bonds in place for the added security that they provide. Because other types of online gambling are a gray area, you'll be playing at your own risk in other games.
